CRL: 4.7 mm
Carnegie Stage 11
Somites present along entire embryo.
Optic vesicle may be present, otic vesicle clearly visible.
No forelimb bud or hind limb bud present.
Three distinct branchial arches visible externally. Fourth branchial pouch clearly observable (in section).

Treatment:

Paraffin Histology.
Embedded cranial side down, body perpendicular to the cutting surface.
Cut at 6 micron section thickness, cross sections of body. Total series is 72 slides. Stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin. Sections 1-19 are from initial block (Block 1). After that re-embedded. The tip of the tail (caudal 1/7 of embryo) broke off during re-embedding. This fragment was re-embedded separately, yielding Blocks 2 and 3. Block 1 was sectioned and mounted on slide 20-64. Block 3 was then sectioned and yielded slides 65-72. Neither block was re-adjusted. Each slide contains roughly 12 sections per slide. Slides are read left to right, top row to bottom row. Low numbers are cranial, high are caudal.
All sections were scanned using Olympus Microsuite software using an Olypus BX40 microscope and a CC-12 digital camera at 10x objective and 10x ocular. The images were saved as TIFF files and then converted to JPG images for use on the web.
