Background and purpose

Much of the illness, disability and death burden of Americans is associated with use of alcohol, tobacco, and other psychoactive drugs. Physicians should play a role in the prevention and treatment of problems caused by these substances. A solid educational base is required to be effective in this arena. This base includes concepts developed and taught by the behavioral, biological, clinical and community health sciences. The Office of Addiction Medicine and Prevention brings together persons from these areas to enhance teaching and research efforts (including undergraduate, post graduate, and continuing education).
