Background and Purpose The teaching, service and research agenda of the Department of Community Health Sciences has facilitated its evolution into an academic base for public health as well as an academic base for population medicine. Community health agencies are an important location of faculty activity for service and research projects for both MD and MPH students. The Office of Public Health Practice provides an academic home for community health practitioners who will be (are) involved in teaching, service and/or research activities associated with NEOUCOM. Objectives - Specifically the office will: 1. Build the capacity of community health practitioners to teach and assess the performance of medical and MPH students. 2. Facilitate and coordinate the development of practice sites for medical and MPH students. 3. Assist in the development of service and research projects involving community agencies. 4. Assess the needs for continuing education in community health. 5. Review the medical and MPH curriculum for appropriate community health content. 6. Identify funding opportunities enhanced by collaboration between practice and academia. 7. Identify opportunities to create jointly funded faculty/staff positions. 8. Enhance awareness of NEOUCOM's programs and personnel in a manner that improves the likelihood of successful collaborative ventures. 9. Foster the development of academic health departments in NE Ohio by enhancing the capacity of local health departments to meet the affiliation criteria established by the NEOUCOM Board of Trustees. Administration and Composition The office is administratively located within the Department of Community Health Sciences. Members of the office are drawn from faculty of the Department, community health agencies, hospitals, managed care companies, and others involved in teaching, service and/or research activities that are community based.
