Session 1:  Orientation to the Community

(Scavenger Hunt)

Purpose of Session 1:

To introduce students to the communities in which they will be working during their AHEC/E longitudinal experience.

Objectives for Session 1:

  • Describe at least five unique community attributes that impact residents’ health in a positive way. 
  • Describe at least five unique community attributes that impact residents’ health in a negative way. 
  • Develop a presentation of community strengths and weaknesses to share with fellow students and course faculty. 

Rootstown Orientation Session – October 29, 2007

Orientation Activities (Oct 29, 9-11:00am):

Rootstown faculty will:

  • Present an overview of the overall AHEC/E experience.
  • Review the description and instructions, items and rules of the upcoming scavenger hunt.

Students will:

  • Complete the pre-activity assessment of community knowledge.

Community Experience

October 30 or November 1, 2007

Community Experience Activities (Oct 30 or Nov 1):

Students will work in their AHEC-E teams to complete a scavenger hunt, gathering material about their communities and presenting their results to each other.  Some materials and information may be located using internet or other “virtual” resources, and other items will require students to travel within their assigned communities.  Students will compile the information gathered about their communities into a poster presentation.

Rootstown Session – November 19, 2007

Rootstown Session Activities (Nov 19, Small Group 8-8:45am, Poster Session 9-11:00am):

Students will:

  • Complete a post-activity assessment of community knowledge.
  • Present their posters, detailing their scavenger hunt results.
