Session 5:  Community as Patient:
Diagnosis and Treatment

Objectives for Session 5:

  • Students will understand the relationship of community health improvement programs to the health of individual patients.
  • Students will understand the parallel of community health improvement programs to individual health and illness care.
  • Students will list the steps involved in a community health improvement program.
  • Students will understand the rationale for targeting social and environmental health risk factors in addition to individual behavioral factors.
  • Students will be able to give examples of evidence based community health improvement programs.  

Didactic Session – August 29, 2007

Student Assignment (before Didactic Session at Rootstown):

  • Read Chapter 1, Overview of PATCH, can be found on AIMS.

Didactic Session at Rootstown (Aug 29, 1-3:00pm):

Rootstown faculty will:

  • Review expectations for student activities.
  • Discuss diagnostic process (aka. community assessment).
  • Discuss identification of treatment options (aka. community interventions).
  • Overview of PATCH process and the AHEC/E second year experience.
  • Discuss community diagnosis and treatment programs using examples.
