Session 9:  Refinement of Community Intervention

  Objectives for Session 9:

  • Students will complete the literature search on model community interventions that address the community health problem. 
  • Based on the strengths/weaknesses/feasibility of the interventions, students will select one intervention to propose to their agency.
  • Students will finalize the proposed intervention for their community agency.
  • Students will finalize the objectives and propose evaluation strategies for the intervention.
  • Students will develop a power point presentation on their intervention.

Community Experience
February 19/21 or February 18 to 29, 2008

Community Experience Activities (Feb 19/21 or Feb 18 to 29):

Students will:

  • Discuss the final recommendations for the community intervention with community faculty and other appropriate partner agencies.
  • Discuss objectives, implementation and evaluation strategies with community faculty and other appropriate partner agencies.
  • Schedule the time and place of the final presentation.
  • Make arrangements for staff and other interested persons to attend the presentation.

Community Faculty will:

  • Discuss potential barriers and solutions to the proposed intervention strategy.
  • Discuss feasibility in the local community, issues of funding, sustainability and potential time line for the intervention.
  • Discuss the plan for evaluation and expected outcomes.
  • Discuss the logistics of the student presentation.

Rootstown Session – March 10, 2008

Student Assignment (before Rootstown Session 9):

  • Develop a draft power point presentation on the intervention (approximately 30 minutes) including the following:  

The Presentation should include:

  • Names of all members of the group, names and titles of home-based and Rootstown-based faculty, agency name, and topic. 
  • Description of the community problem. 
  • Recommended community intervention: 
    • Rationale—describe why you chose this strategy 
    • Evidence—describe (from evidence provided from your literature search) the impact, effectiveness, economic efficiency, and feasibility (for your agency) of the strategy. 
    • Recommended evaluation strategies. 
    • Resources—identify resources that the agency might use to implement the strategy. 
  • A concluding summary of your recommendations  
  • References used in your project. 

Rootstown Session Activities (Mar 10, 2-3:00pm):

Students will:

  • Practice and finalize community presentation.
  • Discuss any revisions with faculty member.
  • Confirm arrangements for presentation.

Faculty will:

  • Provide feedback on the presentation.
  • Prepare students for the question and answer portion of the presentation.
