AFAR Student Fellowship 2006:

This was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. I spent the summer at Johns Hopkins where I was allowed to conduct the research of my choice in regards to the aging population. My mentor was amazing! The program had weekly dinners so that we got to know the other summer scholars in this same program, weekly board review sessions and also epidemiology classes. We were also included in the grand rounds and special events that took place in this department.

The AFAR program at the Universtiy of Michigan was one of the most amazing experiences of my entire life. Not only was I able to live the life of a PhD for the summer by researching, but I was helping to contribute to the fight against health conditions that come with aging. Those that are affliated with aging are not only so nice, but they all have this incredible passion to advocate the importance of aging. What I gained most this past summer was that what seems trivial and non-important in the lab setting can make a world of difference in the lives of older people.

It was a tremendous honor and privelege getting to spend my summer doing research at UCLA and learning from the top geriatric researchers in the country. The program was very well organized and structured so we would have both laboratory and clinical experiences. The program directors went out of their way to guide our experience and make us feel comfortable. Overall, there is no better way I could have envisioned spending my summer.

My research project, at Case Western Reserve University, explores family communication in the Intensive Care Unit. My niche of this project involved looking at the data of patients in five ICU units at two different Cleveland hospitals; MetroHealth and University Hospital. In addition to the research, I was able to see patients at a retirement community in Cleveland. This hands-on experience of treating geriatric patients was a great bonus of the AFAR program.
