The Office of Geriatric Medicine/Gerontology is committed to providing all medical students at the College of Medicine with a foundation in geriatrics. The geriatric curriculum is integrated throughout the students' four years of training.

  • First Year (M1)
    • Aging-related content infused throughout the basic science courses
    • Geriatric cases in the Medical Problems course
    • Psychosocial aspects of aging and end-of-life issues in Behavioral Sciences
    • Communicating with older adults in Interviewing Skills
    • Site visits to independent or assisted living facilities and home hospice or hospice care centers in the M1 Ambulatory Care Experiences (ACE)
  • Second Year (M2)
    • Geriatric module in the Principles of Medical Science Course
    • Geriatric physical exam, videotaped interviews with older adults and a series of geriatric problem-based learning cases in the Introduction to Clinical Medicine Course
    • Site visits to senior service agencies, adult day care centers, geriatric assessment centers, rehabilitation clinics, and home health agencies in the M2 ACE.
    • Aging-related content infused in pharmacology and neurology courses
  • Third year (M3)
    • Diagnosis and management of acute and chronic illnesses in older adults in the Internal Medicine Clerkship
    • Assessment of common ambulatory problems, health promotion and prevention of disease in the Family Medicine Clerkship
    • Special pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative considerations for older persons in the Surgery Clerkship
  • Fourth Year (M 4)
    • One-month rotation in the Primary Care Preceptorship may be with a physician specializing in geriatrics
    • Community Medicine Clerkship may address local health problems of  senior citizens
    • Medical ethics and humanistic perspectives of the care of older adults are addressed in several of the Human Values in Medicine selectives
