The mission of the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM) is to graduate qualified physicians oriented to the practice of medicine at the community level, with an emphasis on primary care: family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology.

The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology of the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine is based at the Rootstown, Ohio, campus. The department has both medical and graduate student teaching responsibilities, and has a research focus in the areas of cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology and pathophysiology, neuropharmacology, neurophysiology and G protein coupled receptors.

Physiology is the study of how living organisms function and, as such, ultimately seeks to provide an understanding of how molecular, cellular, tissue and organ level functions are integrated to support the life of the intact organism and to allow it to adapt to changing environmental conditions.

Pharmacology is the science of drug action on biological systems. It includes knowledge of the sources, chemical properties, biological effects and therapeutic uses of drugs.
