Our General Philosophy
The NEOUCOM Psychiatry Residency Program is based at Akron General Medical Center and Summa Health System ( Akron City Hospital and St. Thomas Hospital ). Clinical rotations also occur at Akron Childrens Hospital and contract agencies of the County of Summit Alcohol Drug Addictions and Mental Health Services Board including Child Guidance Centers , Community Support Services, Portage Path Psychiatric Emergency Services, Psycho-Diagnostic Clinic, and the Summit County Jail.
Our Philosophy
Our Program aims to foster the growth of medically sound physicians capable of pursuing careers in private practice, community/public psychiatry, and academic psychiatry. The NEOUCOM Psychiatry Residency Program adheres to a biopsychosocial model of psychiatry. Our training strives to respectfully integrate theories of the mind and the science of the brain. There is development of a strong foundation in psychodynamic principles, which guide and inform all treatment modalities. Strong emphasis on developing skills in pharmacologically based treatment occurs throughout training. Our program places high value on scientific progress and the benefits research brings to both patient care and professional development.
Our goal is to produce graduates competent in patient care, medical knowledge, psychotherapy, practice-based learning, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism and systems-based practice. During residency, each physician develops a structured body of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will be enriched by a commitment to life-long learning. The teaching methods include: formal didactic courses, seminars, discussions, groups, independent reading and, most importantly, patient care. Relationships with faculty are closer than in most programs and involve role modeling, supervision and feedback in an atmosphere of mutual respect. |
