Vacation and Meetings
Three weeks' vacation plus time for meetings is provided at each level of training.

Educational Allowance and Conference Time

Residents receive an educational allowance based on the level of training to be used for textbooks, seminars, meetings and other educational materials or activities.  Time allotted for conferences is in addition to vacation time.  Up to $1,600 is available for senior residents to participate in Board Review courses.

Personal and Family Health and Dental

Residents may choose from several plans providing varied options suited to individual and family health and dental needs. An additional pharmaceutical policy provides prescription coverage for residents, their spouses and dependent children at no cost.

Loans and Relocation Advances

Residents may borrow up to $1,000 for personal emergencies and educational needs. PGY I residents can receive up to $1,000 in relocation assistance.  In total incoming residents can receive up to $2,000 in interest-free loans.   All loans/advances are repayable by payroll deduction over the term of the Residency.

Relocation Service

All residents are eligible for the assistance of a professional relocation agent to acquaint them with the area and assist in the purchase or rental of housing. This includes tours of Akron's neighborhoods and cultural facilities, as well as spouse job counseling.

Malpractice Insurance

All residents are indemnified for their education and practice activities which are an approved component of the Residency Program.

Research Opportunities

Residents are encouraged to become involved in medical research. Funds are available for approved projects. A new research laboratory, Calhoun Research Laboratory,  is available with staff support for resident endeavors. Biostatistical support and computer services are provided.

Life and Disability Insurance
Term life insurance is provided.  Coverage equals 1 x annual salary, limited to $50,000. Residents can purchase additional life insurance for a nominal cost. Additional Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance is also provided. Individual policies of $1,20 per month are provided for Long Term Disability, with additional coverage available.

Meals

Residents receive free meals while rotating at Akron General Medical Center, Children's Hospital, and Saint Thomas Hospital. On weekends and recognized hospital holidays, spouses/children may join those on-call at no cost.
