The William G. Wasson, M.D., Center for Clinical Skills Training, Assessment, and Scholarship is a dedicated state-of-the-art facility for the teaching, assessment and research of clinical and communication skills. The facility includes:

  • Sixteen fully equipped patient exam rooms and a dedicated simulation lab with unobtrusive viewing capability
  • A central conference room for simultaneous viewing of all exam rooms or dual-monitoring
  • Separate lounges for students/residents and standardized patients
  • A computer-supported management system that allows for the administration, analysis and reporting of student performances
  • Digital recording capability that allows performances to be streamed securely over the Web

Center-based activities concentrate on the use of simulation -- standardized patients and patient simulators -- to assist in the  teaching and assessment of knowledge and skills at a variety of levels in the healthcare professions.

Standardized patients assist in the teaching and assessment of clinical skills, including data gathering for history, physical exam, clinical reasoning, and communication skills.

The Wasson Center also utilizes high-fidelity human patient simulators with physiologically accurate responses to stimuli, as well as a library of task trainers, to enhance learning and allow complex information and procedures to be learned, practiced, and retained more effectively.

Together, standardized patients and simulators provide a high-fidelity simulation environment conducive to acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary for excellent, compassionate and safe patient care.
