Welcome to the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy (NEOUCOM) website. Founded in 1973, the mission of NEOUCOM is to improve the health, economy and quality of life in Northeast Ohio through the medical, pharmacy and health sciences education of students and practitioners at all levels; the development of new knowledge through research in the biomedical, community health and behavioral sciences; and the provision of community service and health education throughout the northeast Ohio region. What does this mean? It means students can expect the highest level of medical and pharmaceutical education, practitioners have a source for continued professional education, and the public has an entity that is concerned about its needs through our continued community outreach, advocacy and research efforts. NEOUCOM is a community-based, public university focused on the health professions, offering a doctor of medicine (M.D.) and a doctor of pharmacy degree (Pharm.D.) The educational consortium includes the Rootstown, Ohio, campus, more than 22 associated hospitals, a range of private and corporate pharmacies, two health departments, and four public Universities The University of Akron, Kent State University, Youngstown State University and Cleveland State University. In addition to these and other collaborative arrangements, the newly-developed NEOUCOM College of Graduate Studies offers a Master of Science (M.S.) and Ph.D. degrees in integrated pharmaceutical sciences. Along with four universities, the Institution is also a major partner in the Consortium of Eastern Ohio Master of Public Health program. Education means more than clinical competence. The core values of competence, communication, caring, character and community known collectively as the Five Cs are the foundation of all our educational activities. All of our graduates, regardless of specialty, have solid backgrounds in community and public health. They understand that the health of their patients is directly related to the health of their communities. Unlimited opportunities for professional and personal growth exist within this collaborative environment. On the Rootstown campus, research efforts focus on auditory neuroscience, skeletal biology, community-based mental health and tissue engineering. Focused research efforts have yielded novel treatments for herpes, bone disease and high cholesterol. Faculty also form ties with consortium university faculty across scientific disciplines to conduct groundbreaking research involving liquid crystal technology and polymer science. Through our combined efforts, we can significantly improve the health and well-being of Ohio's citizens. The Colleges have created a unique curriculum that sets a new standard for interprofessional education of medical and pharmacy students. Medical and pharmacy students learn together in combined classes which results in extensive contact between the two student bodies. Students are able to develop a broad view of patient care and work effectively with other health professionals, leading to better patient outcomes. A NEOUCOM education will shape your mind, develop your abilities and refine your character, so that you will leave here a trained and compassionate healthcare professional you dreamed of becoming. Our students are among the best of their generationintelligent, caring, energetic and driven to improve conditions in the world they will inherit from us. As NEOUCOM (and the world) grows and changes, we will continue to offer preeminent instruction for the future physicians and pharmacists of our state. We are also committed to sustaining our research efforts to help improve the region's health care and add to its economic vitality. Jay A. Gershen, D.D.S., Ph.D.
