About The Program     Top of Page

If you assumed that medical school was at least four years in the future and becoming a physician at least eight, NEOUCOM offers a different path to explore!

NEOUCOM has the oldest accelerated, combined degree program in the state of Ohio and one of only 18 accelerated programs in the nation. Students apply to the program during their senior year of high school, and, upon admission, enjoy the benefits of having a reserved seat in medical school when they begin their college program. They earn a combined bachelor of science and doctor of medicine (B.S./M.D.) degree in only six or seven years.

The B.S./M.D. program has two phases. In Phase 1, students take premedical course work at an accelerated pace of two or three years at one of the three universities in the NEOUCOM educational consortium: The University of Akron, Kent State University and Youngstown State University. NEOUCOM's main campus is centrally located to all three universities, being fewer than 35 miles from each. Classes are attended full time on one of these campuses, including summers. However, students have vacations between semesters, in the spring and over the winter holidays.

Following the successful completion of Phase 1, students begin Phase 2, NEOUCOM's four-year medical school program.

Advantages of the B.S./M.D. Program     Top of Page

Application Procedures

The application process begins in August of each year for the following summer and is an online process.  There is only one "common" application. This application is submitted to NEOUCOM then forwarded to all three undergraduate universities; a separate undergraduate admissions application to each university should not be completed - the common application for the B.S./M.D. program is considered both the application to the program and the application to the university, even if the applicant later decides on a different major.

The application deadline for the B.S./M.D. program is October 1 for Early Action (non-binding) and December 15 for Regular Notification. All of the required materials for a complete application must be postmarked by the deadline date. It is the applicant's responsibility to make sure that all of the required admissions materials meet the postmark deadline.  Letters of recommendation are not required and will not be reviewed for consideration into the program.

A select number of students will be invited to participate in the interview process. The interview selection process is determined independently by each admissions committee at the three consortium universities. Applicants selected for an interview are notified by the university admissions committees in late January.

Application Fee     Top of Page

You may pay the application fee by electronic check or credit card when completing the online application.  Cash will not be accepted.

Applicants may qualify for waiver of the application fee based on receipt of the following documentation: Fee Waiver

Application Status Notifications

Automatic email notifications are sent each Wednesday to those applicants that have yet to finish the online application.  This email lists the applicant's items that are specifically needed.  Applicants can also log back onto the system and review their missing items.

Once the application is complete, NEOUCOM processes the application and forwards to all three consortium universities for consideration.

For Early Action applications that are not complete by the October 1 deadline, they will not be considered for Early Action, but will be considered for Regular Action as long as all application materials are received by December 15.

Interviewing for the B.S./M.D. Program     Top of Page

The NEOUCOM-University Admissions Subcommittee will review applicant files for highly qualified applicants to the B.S./M.D. program.  Competitive applicants will then be selected to interview at the undergraduate institution(s) and at NEOUCOM.  This interview component at NEOUCOM will provide a greater opportunity for applicants to:

  • provide multiple examples of insight into their abilities;
  • meet with NEOUCOM faculty and staff;
  • visit the Rootstown campus;
  • obtain more detailed information about the program and the institution; and
  • meet with medical and pharmacy students to discuss the interprofessional curriculum and life as a medical student.

Letters extended to applicants to interview for Early Action will be sent in late October 28.  Interviews occur on Saturday, November 21 and Sunday November 22, 2009, and are by invitation only.  Applicants may be invited to interview at all three undergraduate institutions and NEOUCOM or may be invited to interview at at least one undergraduate institution and NEOUCOM.

Applicants will be notified the fourth week of December of their status.

Letters extended to applicants to interview for Regular Action will be sent in early February.  Interviews occur on Saturday, Feburary 27 and Sunday, February 28, 2010, and are by invitation only.  Applicants may be invited to interview at all three undergraduate institutions and NEOUCOM or may be invited to interview at at least one undergraduate institution and NEOUCOM.

Applicants will be notified the fourth week of March of their status.

Classes typically begin during the 3rd week in June 2010.
