Dr. Bishayee joined the Pharmaceutical Sciences faculty in August, 2007. He received his Bachelor of Pharmacy, Master of Pharmacy, and Ph.D. from the Jadavpur University, a premier educational and research institution in Calcutta, India. In 1997, he moved to the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), the largest health sciences university in the nation, as a post-doctoral fellow where he worked in the Departments of Pharmacology and Physiology, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Radiology (Radiation Research). He was attached to the UMDNJ for more than ten years in various research, teaching, and scientific administrative positions before joining the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Pharmacy. Dr. Bishayee has been teaching in several courses of the ongoing Pharm.D. curriculum. His teaching interests include Pharmaceutics (including Radiopharmacy), Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacology, and Natural Products/Pharmacognosy. Dr. Bishayee has been engaged in medicinal plants and biomedical research for more than last 15 years. He is an author of over 49 research articles in peer-reviewed journals and 2 book chapters, and presented more than 20 papers at national and international scientific meetings. Research Interests:Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the United States as well the entire world, exceeded only by heart disease. Currently, one of the four deaths in the US is caused by cancer. Dietary behavior seems to be an important modifiable determinant for the risk of cancer. Natural dietary agents, including fruits, vegetables and spices, have been shown to reduce the risk of developing cancer. Although various epidemiological and experimental evidence supports the premise that various plant-derived agents play an important role in cancer chemoprevention, a very small fraction of all plant species (~1%) has been screened for bioactivity. My present research focuses on the study of several dietary constituents, phytochemicals, and related synthetic compounds for prevention and treatment of cancer with the understanding of related mechanisms of action.
