Rats are routinely evaluated serologically for cilia-associated respiratory bacillus (CARB), Mycoplasma pulmonis, pneumonia virus of mice (PVM), Sendai virus, rat parvovirus (RPV), rat coronavirus/sialodacryoadenitis virus (RCV/SDA), Kilham rat virus (KRV), and H-1 virus. Once per year rats are also tested for Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus and Reovirus. Pooled fecal samples from the sentinels in each housing room are evaluated by fecal floatation exam and perianal tape tests from individual animals are examined for evidence of intestinal parasites. Additional testing is noted in "Comments". Breeding colonies are tested quarterly and nonbreeding colonies are tested semiannually. Interpretation of results follow the chart.

Discussion of Findings:

Effective this quarter, the CMU is conducting a more complete serologic panel (Rat Level II Profile as offered by BioReliance) on rats once yearly. This quarter rats were tested serologically for CAR Bacillus, Mycoplasma pulmonis, Pneumonia Virus of Mice, Rat Corona virus/Sialodacryoadenitis virus, Reovirus, Sendai virus, H-1 virus, Kilham Rat virus, Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis virus, and Parvovirus.
