Beginning May, 2008 testing performed on rats was changed to routine serologic evaluation for rat coronavirus/sialodacryoadenitis virus (RCV/SDA), Sendai virus, pneumonia virus of mice (PVM), NS1 (a generic parvo virus antigen), rat parvovirus (RPV), rat minute virus (RMV), Kilham rat virus (KRV), H-1 virus, rat theilovirus (RTV), Mycoplasma pulmonis, Reovirus 3, and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCM).  Once yearly testing of the rats was changed to include additional serologic tests for cilia-associated respiratory bacillus (CAR bacillus), Hantaan virus, Clostridium piliforme (the etiology of Tyzzer's disease), and Mouse adenovirus-1 (MAD1).

Pooled fecal samples from the sentinels in each housing room are evaluated by fecal floatation exam and perianal tape tests from individual animals are examined for evidence of intestinal parasites.

Additional testing is noted in "Comments". Breeding colonies are tested quarterly and nonbreeding colonies are tested semiannually. Interpretation of results follow the chart.

Discussion of Findings:

Effective this quarter, the CMU is conducting a more complete serologic panel (Rat Level II Profile as offered by BioReliance) on rats once yearly. This quarter rats were tested serologically for CAR Bacillus, Mycoplasma pulmonis, Pneumonia Virus of Mice, Rat Corona virus/Sialodacryoadenitis virus, Reovirus, Sendai virus, H-1 virus, Kilham Rat virus, Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis virus, and Parvovirus.
