Dogs are normally individually housed in single cages (kennel pens) which provide the required amount of space for each dog. Group housing may be provided depending on the size of the animals. Of the 44 cages available, 27 cages have access to a large outdoor kennel area through a pass-thru-door. The kennels are constructed of chain-link fencing and permit visual, auditory, and olfactory communication among the animals. Each cage has a resting board and an automatic watering valve. Kennel floors are constructed of sealed concrete. The outside pad is heated to prevent ice and snow buildup. At least five days each week, dogs are given the opportunity for exercise through access to the large outdoor kennel area adjacent to the cages, or to the walkway immediately in front of the cages. The time for exercise ranges from approximately ten minutes to several hours. Chew bones and toys may be provided. All dogs are provided with positive human contact daily during routine husbandry. Initials of the technician on the room maintenance sheet indicate that all animals have been properly exercised. The attending veterinarian may exempt dogs from daily exercise if that exercise may adversely affect the health, condition, or well being of the animals. Dogs also may be exempted from the exercise program if such exemption is described and scientifically justified by the principal investigator in the appropriate committee-approved animal use protocol. Attached is a copy of the Exercise Exemption For Dogs form. Exemptions for health reasons are handled on a case-by-case basis and reviewed at least monthly by the attending veterinarian.
