1. You must submit an Animal Care and Use Protocol Form if:

A. You plan to use live vertebrate animals for teaching, testing, or research at NEOUCOM/P.

B. You receive funding administered by NEOUCOM/P for studies of live vertebrates at another institution (i.e., the animals are owned by NEOUCOM/P or a NEOUCOM/P-based investigator).

C. You submit a grant application that includes the use of live vertebrate animals.

D. No animal work can proceed until a protocol has received full IACUC approval.  Forms can be obtained from the IACUC website.

2. You do not need to submit an Animal Care and Use Protocol Form if:

A. You use invertebrates.

B. You are involved in a project at another institution which involves vertebrates for which NEOUCOM/COP provides no funding, no aspect of the animal research takes place at NEOUCOM/P, the animals are not owned by NEOUCOM/P or a NEOUCOM/P-based investigator, and the project is reviewed by that institution’s IACUC.

C. You plan to use cultured cells or tissues from vertebrates that have already been euthanized under approval by the NEOUCOM /P or other IACUC or regulatory body.  Because of the zoonotic potential, we require that you inform the CMU if you are importing tissues from an outside source, such as another institution or from an abattoir (slaughterhouse).

3. You need to submit a Hazard Form with your Protocol if:

A. You plan to administer or expose live vertebrates to radioactive materials, carcinogens, infectious agents, recombinant nucleic acid, or highly toxic compounds (an LD50 of > 50 mg/kg). Forms can be obtained from the IACUC website.

NOTE: If you have any questions regarding the submission of protocol and hazard forms, please contact the IACUC Chairperson or the IACUC Coordinator.
