What's the difference between a resume and a CV? The primary differences are the length, the content and the purpose. A resume is a one or two page summary of your skills, experience and education. A goal of resume writing is to be brief and concise since the resume reader will most likely only spend a minute or so reviewing your qualifications. A Curriculum Vitae, commonly referred to as CV, is a longer (two or more pages), more detailed synopsis. It includes a summary of your educational and academic backgrounds as well as teaching and research experience, publications, presentations, awards, honors, affiliations and other details. When to use a Resume A resume is used when applying for a job or an internship. You may need different versions of a resume for different types of positions. When to use a CV A Curriculum Vitae is used when applying for international, academic, education, scientific or research positions or when applying for fellowships or grants. As with a resume, you may need different versions of a CV for different type of positions. You will need a CV if you plan on applying for fellowships and research opportunities. If you are in need of a letter of recommendation, your letter writer will most likely ask for a copy of your CV to aid in writing your letter. Ultimately you will need a CV to apply for residencies.
What to include on your Resume Your resume should include your name, contact information, education, skills and work-related experience. What to include in your CV Like a resume, your CV should include your name, contact information, education, skills and experience. In addition to the basics, a CV includes research and teaching experience, publications, grants and fellowships, professional associations and licenses, awards and other information relevant to the position you are applying for. Tips for Creating a CV or Resume Regardless of the format the CV must be direct and concise. You do not want your reader to labor over this document. They must be able to scan it and quickly locate the particular information they seek. Your first CV may only be 1-2 pages long. Later on, your CV will increase in direct proportion to your experience. Take the time to create a CV that works well for you. Keep in mind that your CV supplements your application materials, and that the reader is looking for how you may be of value to their organization. In preparing and printing your CV, use a word-processor and a good quality printer. You want to make a first-class presentation, so choose a high quality resume bond paper (look for paper with a high cotton or linen content at a print or office supply store). White or off-white are the traditional color choices, but beige or light grey are also acceptable. It is not necessary to obtain the service of a commercial printer; doing your resume yourself also allows you to create multiple resumes targeted to the specialties to which you are applying. You will include your CV with applications requesting it and you should also offer a copy to the individuals you request to write letters of recommendation for you.
