Why do research as a student?
Health care delivery is a dynamic scientific profession and research is used to constantly update and improve the way we treat patients. Research is a scholarly or scientific investigation that is used to discover the answer to a question and serves as the basis for the discovery of information. While a student, involvement in research allows you to:
Most NEOUCOM students choose to do research at some point in their undergraduate or medical education career. Students find that research allows them to gain skills that could not be accumulated through traditional coursework. Additionally, the student and researcher can develop a positive mentoring relationship. There are a plethora of research opportunities for NEOUCOM students. Some students choose shorter projects that last a few weeks or a summer while others devote more time by taking a year off to do research. This site is designed to be a resource for students when searching for research experiences.
Getting Started Creating the research opportunity thats right for youThe first step in creating your research opportunity is identifying the type of research experience you want. This may be different depending on your prior research experience and your educational level. The next step is finding and/or creating the experience you want. This is done through research and networking. The best people to begin talking with are your faculty and peers. Students in any year should approach faculty in their area of interest. This can be done via email, phone, or a conversation after class. Peers can also be helpful in talking about their past research experiences.
Frequently Asked QuestionsDo I have to do research in order to gain a good residency? The impact of prior research and published articles is different for every specialty and for every residency program. Most residency programs are looking for doctors who are well-rounded. Yes, prior research experience does help residency directors to differentiate medical students, however, you must be careful not to spend your time doing research for the sole reason of padding your resume. Most residency programs will see right through this ruse. If biomedical research interests you little or not at all, then devote your extracurricular time to activities you enjoy doing, such as community service, health policy work, politics, etc. What are the differences between clinical research and basic science research? Clinical research generally involves the evaluation of human patient outcomes from treatments. Basic science research does not involve the use of human subjects. Its purview is the lab bench. This is where basic properties are examined for their potential as human medical treatments and where the basic organization of the human body down to molecular structure is studied. What about public health and health policy research? These two areas are largely expanding focuses of research in the medical fields. These fields are important because they serve as a structure for applying the eventual findings of clinical and basic science biomedical research. Students interested in these fields may further their education by obtaining a masters in public health, a masters in business administration, a law degree, or a masters in public policy, among other graduate degrees.
NEOUCOM Student Research ResourcesIntramural Programs NEOUCOM Summer Research Fellowship Program In the spring, students in good academic standing at any level of the MD curriculum may apply for research fellowships in the basic medical, clinical or community health sciences. This Summer Research Fellowship Program is coordinated by the NEOUCOM Office of Research & Sponsored Programs. Summer fellows are expected to use a scientific approach to investigate a research problem under supervision of a NEOUCOM faculty member. Summer fellows are required to participate in an orientation at which information about research design, methods, and data analysis is presented. All fellows make presentations on Poster Day at the end of the summer. Research projects are assigned by a matching process. Students are interviewed by faculty sponsors, and they both submit their rank preferences. Students are matched to sponsors preferences. A stipend is paid to each summer fellow according to the time commitment. A directory of available NEOUCOM Summer Fellowships is published and distributed each spring by the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs. This directory will be posted in NEOUCOM DOCS (intranet) when available.
