Home / Employment Opportunities / Ohio Research Scholar in Skeletal Biology/Professor - Anatomy and Neurobiology

The Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy (NEOUCOM) announces an endowed professorship in the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology to study molecular and cell biology of bone or cartilage. This position is generously supported through the Ohio Research Scholar Program created by the State of Ohio and benefits from strong regional collaborative arrangements. It represents an extraordinary opportunity for an outstanding scientist to lead a team of faculty researchers in areas that may include tissue engineering, medical applications of biopolymers, normal and abnormal skeletal development, orthopaedic diseases, and cancer. There will be substantial opportunities for the Ohio Research Scholar to translate research findings into clinical applications, intellectual property, and economic development.

The Ohio Research Scholar and team will interact with both established and developing groups at NEOUCOM and its partner institutions. A major expectation is that the Scholar becomes an active participant in NEOUCOM’s Skeletal Biology Research Focus Area, a group that includes Ph.D. and M.D. researchers/clinicians interested in the skeleton at all organizational levels, from molecules to cells to organisms, from embryonic development to aging, and from clinical to evolutionary sciences. The Skeletal Biology Research Focus Area extends to basic scientists, orthopaedic clinical specialists, and physician-scientists located at the nearby Akron Children’s Hospital, Akron General Health System, Summa Health System, and the University of Akron. Together with these institutions and with support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, NEOUCOM is a partner in the recent launch of the Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron (www.bioinnovationinstitute.org), a regional initiative with a major research focus on the interface between skeletal biology and biopolymers. The Scholar is expected to play a substantial role in the development of research in the Center for Biomaterials and Medicine of the BioInnovation Institute. The Scholar will be able to participate in appropriate graduate programs at Kent State University or the University of Akron. Significant collaborative opportunities also exist with programs at Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Clinic.

The Ohio Research Scholar Program requires that the Scholar be recruited from outside the State of Ohio. The successful Scholar candidate will be an experienced and productive scientist, capable of leading a team of faculty researchers, with a record of sustained extramural funding and strong current funding. It is highly desirable that the Research Scholar have experience in clinical or translational research. The successful candidate will contribute to the education, research and service missions of the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology and NEOUCOM. Candidates must have an earned Ph.D. and/or M.D and substantial postgraduate research experience, with credentials that will qualify the candidate for tenure. Inquiries about the position should be directed to Walter Horton, Ph.D., Professor of Anatomy and Vice President for Research at wehj@neoucom.edu.

Interested candidates should apply electronically. Please include a curriculum vita and statement of research interests and goals. Applicants should also provide the names of four references.
